Reimbursement rates in federally funded, state administered child care programs are so low that they force child care centers and homes to pay low staff wages. However, it appears that when the federal government provides funding to the nation's "leading" financial institutions, no such restrictions apply.
ABC reported:
"Some industry analysts predict that the average managing director at an investment bank that is receiving government [bailout] money could receive a bonus of $625,000 this year, according to data from Alan Johnson and Associates."
CNN reported:
"Days after it got a federal bailout, American International Group Inc. spent $440,000 on a posh California retreat for its executives, complete with spa treatments, banquets, and golf outings, according to lawmakers investigating the company's meltdown. AIG sent its executives to the coastal St. Regis resort south of Los Angeles, California, even as the company tapped into an $85 billion loan from the government it needed to stave off bankruptcy."

This is outrageous and maddening. If there is no petition yet about our outrage and the need to reverse this specific trend, there should be, and we need to make certain our president-elect reads it.

I suppose I should not be suprised by this, but it is just so frustrating! What do these people do that is more important OR takes more skill than what teachers do? And yet we teachers would never expect to be treated this way, in fact we are giddy when we are treated to something as simple as a nice lunch at a conference or getting paid a presenter's fee for doing a workshop! You made a great comparison of these two government subsidies. Thanks.

It's so clear: children are one of our greatest resources. Yet we do not VALUE them and those who care for them. I pray that God give us a voice so those new elected leaders LISTEN. All of our futures are at stake!!

This mind set frightens me. I don't know how or if we can change it. I thank God that there are people commited to the raising up of our young people .... and in our case our youngest ones .... even within the constrains of less than adequate wages.
I will write to my Senators but frankly don't have hope that my voice will even be heard. What a difficult reality with which to start my day.
Children are arriving ... they need me and I need them ... as does our world. I go off into their brightness!

It is a shame to hear this. I have worked for the same Head Start program for 17 years and still cannot bring home 15,000 yearly. Last year I didn't even bring home 10 after taxes and after the money I payed out for health care. Is it ever going to really matter to ANYONE. Head Start IS THE FUTURE of America.
