What Peeves You?
January 18, 2010
Life's most urgent question is: what are you doing for others?
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
For the past two weeks our Exchange Insta Poll has been tracking what readers view as the most serious challenges facing our field.  The top threats you identified are indeed very heavy issues:
  1. State of the economy
  2. Competition from Pre-K in public schools
  3. Children with challenging behavior
  4. Competitive pay for staff
Now we are going to lighten up and have you tell us your pet peeves in this week's Exchange Insta Poll.  Wikipedia defines a pet peeve as "a minor annoyance that an individual identifies as particularly annoying to them."  To get the ball rolling, I will share a few of my pet peeves:
  • When you are having a face-to-face conversation with someone and they stop abruptly to answer a phone call or read an instant message.
  • When you are calling a company and you get tangled up in their long impersonal automated answering system.
  • When I find myself spending all my work time responding to e-mails.
So relieve a little of your stress by off-loading some of your pet peeves in the Exchange Insta Poll.

You may be peeved by the many challenges of online learning.  Peeve no more; The ecelearn Guide to Learning Online will help you solve all challenges and make online learning a rewarding experience.
The ecelearn Guide to Learning Online is a practical resource on essential technology skills and effective online learning practices written for early childhood professionals who are new to eLearning.  The focus is on attitudes, technology skills, and online learning strategies needed to be a successful eLearner.

I cannot believe such a biased and offensive comment would come from an organization such as yours. This comment was included as an option in the "Pet Peeves Poll". ...people who listen to conservative talk radio and believe what they hear...

It is no business of yours to tell your readers what political stance to take or which direction to lean. While you may not have explicitly said "Vote Democrat", you implied that with the inclusion of this comment.
Frequently you send wonderful articles about inclusion and tolerance of those who may be different than us. Why is alright to NOT be tolerant of those with a different political viewpoint?
I am shocked to see this sort of intolerant comment on your website and will no longer be using you as a resource. Also, I will ensure that my colleagues are aware of this. Regardless of someone's political beliefs, everyone should feel welcome in our effort to improve early childhood education. Hopefully, the children you work with will learn a better way, than to continue with this discriminating point of view.

Are we living our lives for ourselves and "looking out for number one" or are we doing something constructive with our lives. People feel that my life is my life, but don't realize that what we do or don't do affects everyone around us. In life there needs to be a balance as to when we can help others and not be taken advantage of, or baare we being selfish.
