Assessing Child Assessment
June 5, 2017
When Black women win victories, it’s a boost for virtually every segment of society.
-Angela Davis, professor and author

"Students spend an average of 10 days out of the school year taking district-mandated tests and nine days taking state-required tests, according to the Center on Education Policy. Over 12 years of schooling, that adds up to nearly four months of a young person's life. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. That number does not include teacher-made tests, quizzes, final exams, many college-admissions tests and pretests; nor does it account for the amount of time teachers spend preparing students to take all these tests," writes Debra Viadero in Education Week.

"Change is bubbling in the assessment world. Common standards are reshaping standardized tests. New federal laws are causing states to ramp up tests for English-language learners. Formative assessments are going digital, and students are being encouraged to create their own assessments to show what they've learned." Viadero’s article "provides a snapshot of these developments and others in the changing field of assessment."
