Getting a Bang Out of Science and Math
June 13, 2017
Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.
-Voltaire, 1694 – 1778, writer and philosopher

"Onetime child star Mayim Bialik earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience, then returned to acting on the TV hit The Big Bang Theory – playing a scientist. It's given her a unique view of women’s roles, in STEM fields and in general," writes Neil DeGrasse Tyson in the June 2017 issue of National Geographic.

When asked about her childhood science influences, Bialik recalls, "In junior high I had no natural affinity for math and science—and all the boys in my classes worked so much faster than I did that I just assumed I must not be good at it. I didn’t really understand the beauty of science and math…until later in high school, when this woman who was my biology tutor gave me the confidence that I could be a scientist."

"Part of my advocacy is to try to put a fresh face, a positive face, and a female face on these (STEM) subjects. I think that a lot of women don’t know the kinds of careers that are available to them."

Learning is in Bloom
Cultivating Outdoor Explorations

Looking for ways to support STEM learning and your future neuroscientists so they can see the beauty of science and math in the natural world? Ruth Wilson’s latest book, Learning is in Bloom: Cultivating Outdoor Explorations, will set you on the path. According to Wilson, "Helping children become more aware of nature's rhythms and connections will foster their sense of wonder and deepen their interest in the natural world."
