In her article Using the Element of Surprise in Environmental Design, Michelle Pratt challenges readers to view indoor and outdoor spaces from the 'eyes of the child' in order to thoughtfully create an environment for engaged learning.
She asserts that although "close attention needs to be given to the development of spaces with a focus on materials, colours, light, microclimate, and furnishings... young children's perspectives have been an under-used resource in testing the relevance and applicability of such criteria." She asserts that being open to "incorporating the ability to surprise would see improvement for young children, families, and staff."
