Look at Families with New Eyes
August 30, 2018
Experience is not what happens to you; it is what you do with what happens to you.
-Aldous Huxley

In the popular training DVD, Inspiring Practices for Partnering with Families, John Nimmo shares this advice:
"Sometimes when you're stuck in your relationship with children, you really have to step back and reframe things. Say to yourself, 'I've got to start looking at this child in a completely different way because I'm boxing this child in'…

I think that can very easily happen with parents too… 'This parent is the difficult parent; this is the parent that's the unfriendly parent; this is the parent who is irresponsible, doesn't follow through on things.' When this happens, stop and reflect on your own bias. Ask yourself, how could I rephrase that? What could be happening in their lives? I have to find some way to see this parent in a more strength-based way because it's impossible to have a relationship otherwise."

What a wonderful theory! If everyone had these same thoughts, we would have far less turmoil in this world.
