Encourage Young Writers
September 3, 2020
You can’t use up creativity. The more you use the more you have.
-Maya Angelou

“Writing is a means of communication that far exceeds the ability to form marks on paper. It is an expression of who we are as individuals,” explains Rebecca Giles in her new book, A Young Writer’s World: Creating Early Childhood Classrooms Where Authors Abound.

Throughout the book, filled with beautiful photos and helpful examples of children’s work, Giles urges educators to provide opportunities for children to think of themselves as authors from an early age.

“As children explore the wonders of the written word, imitating the writers around them, they begin to realize that developing one’s ideas on paper by composing sentences is a rewarding process,” she explains. “With plenty of time and rich experiences that allow children to incorporate writing into their play, they can successfully navigate the journey to become confident and creative authors.

This foundational process in early childhood development is imperative. The ability to express oneself in print, whether it is handwritten or typed, is a necessary educational skill and a talent highly valued in many ventures within classrooms, communities, and society.”
