Providing Support for Families
August 30, 2021
Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.
-Lao Tzu

Dear Exchange Community,

So many people have been feeling an extra layer of stress right now, especially early childhood practitioners and families with young children. Recently the World Forum Foundation held a discussion in Bonnie’s Global Cafe about ideas for supporting parents. Roslyn Duffy, author of the book, The Top Ten Preschool Parenting Problems, suggested during the call that holding family meetings could be helpful at this time.

Here’s the link to the discussion. Roslyn starts sharing at 36:04.

Here is some advice, from Roslyn’s book, which you are welcome to pass along to parents, about the Do’s and Dont’s of family meetings:

“DO use family meetings to:

  • Listen to each person’s perspective, ideas and problems
  • Teach and model values
  • Solve problems
  • Work together regularly
  • Appreciate one another
  • Plan fun times together

DON’T use family meetings:

  • As a home-style courtroom
  • To dictate adult rules
  • Only for crises”

You can be a steady source of support to families during a hard time in our world. And we hope we can be a support to you.

Warmly,
The Exchange Team
