Storytelling as a Strategy for Connection and Nurturing

A blog on the National Association for the Education of Young Children website is called, “The Power of Storytelling in Early Childhood: Helping Children Process the Coronavirus Crisis.” Author Susan Friedman writes this about storytelling: “It’s how families, cultures, and communities share information, values, emotions, hopes, and beliefs. Under usual circumstances, telling stories, reading aloud compelling children’s literature, and planning opportunities for children to create and share their own stories are things teachers do daily. But…these are not usual circumstances.” She goes on to describe a number of strategies for using stories to help children deal with the current crisis we all face. 

In the Out of the Box Kit, “Once Upon a Story,” Laura Friedman writes about the power of storytelling to help children become readers and writers. Even more importantly, she explains that oral storytelling helps children “have something relatable about which to read and write.” Our storytelling can help children make sense of their world.
