Characteristics of Courageous Leaders

When you are enthusiastic about what you do, you feel this positive energy. It’s very simple.
Paulo Coelho, Brazilian novelist

Writing in Forbes magazine, Susan Tardanico explains that there are certain characteristics shared by courageous and effective leaders. In her words:

"If you want to see more courageous action by your people, consider whether you're modeling the 10 traits of courageous leaders:

  1. Confront reality head-on.
  2. Seek feedback and listen.
  3. Say what needs to be said.
  4. Encourage push-back.
  5. Take action on performance issues.
  6. Communicate openly and frequently.
  7. Lead change.
  8. Make decisions and move forward.
  9. Give credit to others.
  10. Hold people (and yourself) accountable."

Judy Jablon, writing in the Exchange Essentials article collection, "Courageous Leadership," reinforces the importance of good communication strategies for courageous, optimistic leaders:

"Communication is key to maintaining positive and effective relationships. Effective leaders use conversation and dialogue rather than top-down commands. Communication includes pausing before speaking, monitoring tone, listening well, asking questions, being sensitive to cultural and linguistic diversity, and using self awareness to reflect and adjust to the person with whom you are speaking."
