Background

In the summer of 1992, Amelia Gambetti, educator for 25 years in the schools for young children in Reggio Emilia, Italy, was invited by Dr. George Forman, professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, to spend a year as "Visiting Faculty," in the University of Massachusetts Skinner Laboratory School.

Mary Beth Radke, involved in early childhood education in various roles for 15 years, hearing of Gambetti's visit, inquired about workshops and conferences. Shortly before the opening of school, Forman asked her to apply to be Amelia's teaching assistant. And the story of their work together began!

Lella Gandini, official liaison in the United States for the Administration of Early Childhood Education of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia and adjunct professor in the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, interviewed Gambetti and Radke about their experiences working together in Amherst.

Background: The University of Massachusetts Lab School is a campus based nursery school, providing early school opportunities for young children as well as serving as a training site for faculty and college students.
