US and Canadian Investment in ECE Lagging

No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship
James Comer

A recent report produced by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Starting Strong II:  Early Childhood Education and Care, presents the results of research on public expenditures on early care and education by industrialized nations.  When comparing public expenditures on early care and education services for children 0 - 6 as a percentage of a nation's GDP, the report reveals that the US and Canada both rank in the lower tier.

At the top tier are Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and France that all expend at least 1% of their GDP on early care and education.

In the middle tier, Hungary, Austria, and the United Kingdom expend between .5% and 1%

In the lowest tier, countries expending less than .5%, are the US, Canada, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and Australia.

The full Starting Strong II report is available at the OECD bookstore (www.oecdbookshop.org) as well as on Amazon.com.
