Slowing Down

Adults do learn through play; and where they are learning, children are likely to be learning, too.
Betty Jones, Educator and Mentor, 1930-2022

The Winter 2010 issue of Good magazine was declared to be the "slow issue."  It explained that "slow stands for a focus on quality, authenticity, and longevity rather than a mindless adherence to the faster and cheaper ethos."  One idea for slowing down that was proposed in that issue was to eliminate something — "try going for a set period of time without doing something wasteful — or at least something unhelpful that you rely upon but wish you didn't."  Here is how they propose to eliminate:

  1. Identify what you'll eliminate — plastic bags, processed foods, your car, your cell phone, TV, credit cards, meat — anything you want to change your relationship with.
  2. Make a game plan.  Think of all the areas where the item you plan to eliminate comes into your life.  If it serves a necessary purpose, with what are you going to replace it?
  3. Improvise.  The week is going to start and you're going to have to think on your toes.  Get creative about filling in the gaps that your sacrifice has left.
  4. Learn.  How did it feel to go without that thing?  Did going without it slow you down, literally or figuratively?  Did you do anything differently that you would like to make part of your regular life?
