Budget-Cutting Tips

The NonProfit Times (April 1, 2011) offered “4 tips for reducing the impact of funding cuts.” While this article was directed at large non profits, I think three of the ideas have applications in all organizations… - Don’t just budget, continuously plan. One in five chief financial officers will tell you that by the time a new year begins, their budgets are already outdated…. By using a continuous planning model, budgets and business plans are continually reviewed throughout the course of the year to help determine how you’re faring at each point in your budget cycle and what adjustments need to be made.
- Embrace nontraditional, low-cost means of communication…. Don’t hesitate to use the Internet to cut your costs; nontraditional and free means of communication, such as JUMO, Twitter, and Facebook, can significantly increase public awareness of your organization.
- Consider strategic partnerships or mergers. Both have the ability to significantly expand your reach, with little added exposure.
