Fostering Collegial Spirit

The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it is the same problem you had last year.
John Foster Dulles

One of the most popular books in the Exchange Store is Paula Jorde Bloom's, A Great Place to Work: Creating a Healthy Organizational Climate.  In the book she talks about the importance of nurturing collegial spirit:

"The men and women who enter the field of early care and education are caring and dedicated educators.  But the treadmill of activity that consumes their time and energy on the job can keep them from establishing close relationships with each other.  The physical layout of space, time pressures, and conflicting schedules are just some of the barriers that prevent teachers from exchanging information, sharing ideas, and lending and receiving support.

"As director, you play an instrumental role in encouraging your teachers to support each other and in nurturing collegial spirit.  When a deep sense of collegiality exists in a group, it inspires enthusiasm, devotion, and a strong regard for the honor of the group....  Wise directors know they can't force a sense of esprit de corps.  Contrived collegiality invariably backfires.  A genuine sense of collegiality must be nurtured and developed by careful attention to the social and affiliation needs of people who work together."
