A New Assistant Teacher

To follow, without halt, one aim: There's the secret of success.
Anna Pavlova

In her book, Teaching Four-Year-Olds:  A Personal Journey, Carol Hillman talks about how she works with a new assistant teacher:

"When I work with a new assistant teacher, I have a plan in my mind that evolves over the first six weeks.  I observe whether she feels comfortable in the jobs she is undertaking.  I observe the pace at which she works, paying particular attention to her sense of timing.  I want to see how she anticipates the needs of the children.  I want to see how she interprets the mood of the group.  Just as I do with the children in my class, I spend a lot of time just listening and observing.  I try to plan opportunities that will encourage personal growth and professional development.  For me, this is what makes each school year different.  It forces me to stretch my mind, and it sharpens my sensitivity to others."
