Observing at Mealtime

Nature has given us two ears but only one mouth.
Benjamin Disraeli

"What if lunchtime could be more than a meal?" asks Betty Piedra in her Exchange article, "Mealtime Observation," which forms the basis for the newest Out of the Box Training Kit by the same name.  Piedra continues...

"Lost amidst the chaos and confusion of a typical preschool classroom at lunchtime are important moments of observable growth and development.  Because lunch is both an independent task and a social event, it offers a unique chance to study children in action, if we can only make the time to watch.  As children move through this daily routine, their interactions with the environment and their peers are opportunities for educators to notice changes in motor and social-emotional development.  We can take advantage of this observation-rich time by planning ahead, recognizing opportunities for observation across developmental areas,  and using our observations for individual assessment."
