"Different leaders exhibit different types of action logic — ways in which they interpret their surroundings and react when their power or safety is challenged," observed David Rooke and William Torbert in their Harvard Business Review article, "Seven Transformations of Leadership" (hbr.org; April 2005). They described these seven ways of leading:

Opportunist — Wins any way possible, self-oriented, manipulative.

Diplomat — Avoids overt conflict; wants to belong; helps bring people together.

Expert — Rules by logic and expertise; seeks rational efficiency.

Achiever — Meets strategic goals; effectively achieves goals through teams.

Individualist — Interweaves competing personal and company action logics.

Strategist — Exercises the power of mutual inquiry, vigilance, and vulnerability.

Alchemist — Integrates material, spiritual, and societal transformation.
