Difficult Conversations

In the hands of our neighbor, the morsel always appears big.
Russian Proverb

In What You Need to Lead an Early Childhood Program, Holly Elissa Bruno describes three powerful concepts for being effective in difficult conversations:

  1. Rather than waste time arguing over who should win, devote energy to understanding and accepting that each of us sees the world through different eyes.
  2. Compromise often results in "unfinished business" and resentment.  Aim instead for a deeper solution that honors each person's values.
  3. If we look deep enough, we will find a point of agreement between the opposing parties.
