Overweight Preschoolers at Risk

Always be on the lookout for the presence of wonder.
E.B. White

The July 24, 2009 issue of ExchangeEveryDay contained this chilling message:

"Researchers studying more than 3,000 children 3 to 6 years old found that those with large waist circumferences and high body mass indexes (BMIs) were more likely to show early signs of cardiovascular risk," reports Preschool Matters, the newsletter of the National Institute for Early Education Research (April 2009).  The report concluded...

"Sarah Messiah, a University of Miami researcher who analyzed the data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, said the new findings are worrisome in light of the fact that about one-quarter of U.S. children aged 2 to 5 are overweight....  [T]he findings show that the battle against obesity needs to begin in early childhood."
