Praise from a Head Start Kid

It takes a long time to become young.
Pablo Picasso

Last week at the 42nd Annual Head Start Conference in Washington, DC, a self-proclaimed "Head Start kid" gave tribute to the organization she credits for inspiring her love of learning. The name of that kid? Sylvia Mathews Burwell, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

In a speech commemorating Head Start's 50th anniversary, Burwell reminisced about watching chicks hatch when she was in preschool and praised the program as "crucial to fighting poverty and building up our next generation." Burwell called on Congress to enact President Barack Obama's budget, which requests more than $10 billion for Head Start, a $1.5 billion increase over this year's budget. "Head Start does not need to be a partisan issue," she said.
