8 Skills for the 21st Century

"Education has traditionally focused on the basic '3Rs' of reading, writing, and arithmetic.  However, as the ever increasing pace of technological innovation drives changes in the world, educators must re-evaluate whether the skills they teach truly provide their students with the best opportunities to succeed in school, the workforce, and life overall."  This observation comes from Michael Sledd writing in Edudemic.  He listed the following 8 necessary skills:

• Leadership ("fostering collaboration, working towards common goals, acting as a leader in any role...")
• Digital literacy
• Communication ("engaging in open dialogue where students have to practice listening and engaging in discussions of ideas...")
• Emotional intelligence ("essential for building and maintaining relationships...")
• Entrepreneurship ("creativity, drive, innovation and passion... in any venture...")
• Global citizenship
• Problem solving
• Team-working
