Dual Language Activities

In her book, Many Languages, One Classroom, Karen Nemeth provides ideas for preschool classroom activities that are welcoming to children with all linguistic backgrounds. Here are a few of her ideas:

Develop a welcome routine that helps DLL [dual language learners] children get involved in an activity as soon as they come in and to ensure that they are not overlooked. Some teachers make sure that a small variety of calm and easy activities are set out when children arrive such as a limited selection of table toys, puzzles, small blocks, or books.
When children arrive, make a special effort to greet each one warmly using their home language and an appropriate greeting. Ask the children's family members... to help with this.
A daily schedule is an important part of a high-quality preschool program, and the comforting predictability of the schedule seems to be even more important for the dual language learners.
