Choosing Courage

It is not fair to ask of others what you are unwilling to do yourself.
Eleanor Roosevelt

In his article, "Choosing Courage in a Climate of Fear," which forms the basis for an Exchange Out of the Box Training Kit by the same name, Jeffrey Perkins observes...

"There is no doubt that the world is a quickly changing place that provides lots of opportunities for stress and anxiety.  Helping young children work with their fears now will help them build the foundation they need for confronting challenges and crises throughout their lives.  Perhaps teaching our children courage begins with the simple act of becoming curious about fear.

"Because of young children's development, solutions should involve giving children something concrete that they can see like the clouds that signal a lightning storm — not an involved explanation of how lightning works.  Children do not use adult logic.  Channel the concern into things they understand.  Most fears that children and adults have can be explored through art or play.  Help parents find ways to explore their children's fears by providing recommended reading of children's books on common fears.  Choosing to respond with curiosity can also model essential problem solving skills to our children."
