In her article,"'I Want My Baby to Read': Supporting Parents in Guiding Early Language and Literacy Development," which serves as the basis for the Out of the Box Training Kit, "Supporting Parents in Guiding Early Language and Literacy Development," Bisa Batten Lewis provides guidance on what literacy strategies are appropriate and what strategies are not appropriate. She lists these appropriate language and literacy goals:

Responding to frequently-spoken sounds and words
Following simple directions and requests
Using motions, sounds, and gestures to begin to communicate
Using sounds in social situations
Beginning to express themselves freely and creatively using sounds
Attending to stories
Exploring books
Showing awareness of pictures
