The Keys to Successful Professional Learning Communities

Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.
Marie Curie, 1867-1934, Polish-French physicist and chemist

In the current issue of Exchange magazine, Kate Kane offers seven ‘ingredients’ for fostering successful professional learning communities:

  1. Psychological Safety
  2. Strong Relationships
  3. Setting Norms Together
  4. Collaborative Problem-Solving
  5. Practice Leadership Skills
  6. Change Up the Format
  7. Showcase Both Successes and Challenges

Why showcase challenges? “It is through the challenging situations that leaders learn creative problem-solving strategies and change-management skills. The challenges also bond the group toward collective analysis of the issue and solution-oriented strategies.” And on the flip side, “showcasing successes supports educators and encourages reflection, and allows directors to identify their own strengths as leaders.”
