La Petite Academy

Dear La Petite team members,

We were all shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf states. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the thousands of people who were affected. As a company, we were fortunate with minimal damage to our Alabama and North Florida Academies. Unfortunately we are still unable to assess the impact to our New Orleans corporate location in partnership with Lockheed-Martin.

Since the tragedy, a number of La Petite Academy associates and families have asked how they can best support the relief efforts. I am heartened -- but not surprised -- that so many of you want to help the children and families in need. After all, a passion for helping others -- especially children -- is at the heart of La Petite Academy.

As the tragedy in the south continues to unfold, I believe the most effective and expedient way to provide support is for individuals to reach out directly to credible aid organizations, such as the American Red Cross, UNICEF and others. I encourage you, and any La Petite Academy parents inquiring about relief efforts, to contact these organizations directly to identify the best ways to help.

Time is of the essence in this situation and these organizations are far better equipped than La Petite Academy to ensure donations of money and supplies get to those who need them as quickly as possible. For this reason, I ask that you do not hold a collection or fundraising drive at your school at this time. Reports have indicated that it is difficult to move tangible items effectively, therefore monetary donations to these reputable groups will get the help where it is needed without unnecessary delays.

In the meantime, all of us at La Petite Academy can and should continue our great work for children, here at home, through our daily work in our academies and through our support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Our Academies in the Houston, Dallas and Birmingham markets are providing discounted care to the children of displaced Shell Oil Company Associates. As other opportunities to help arise and fall within the scope of our business, we'll discuss those with the DVP's and act accordingly.

Best wishes,
Gary Graves
