HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF

HOW YOU CAN HELP!

Our thoughts and prayers are with our NBCDI members in the Gulf Region and all families affected by Hurricane Katrina. The immediate need for the refugees is cash donations. We encourage you to contribute to the American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) or the Salvation Army (www.salvationarmy.org) who are providing front line relief to the hurricane victims. You may also consider giving to local charities and faith-based organizations providing assistance to the victims. No amount is too small.

NBCDI is working with our affiliates, specifically those in Baton Rouge, LA; Houston, TX; and Atlanta, GA to develop a response to meet the needs of young children and their families. Continue to check our website for further information on NBCDI's response to the crisis created by Hurricane Katrina.

NBCDI Resources for Families:

Helping Children Cope with Crisis: This workbook for African American Families has useful tips and activities for helping children cope with disasters. A safety plan is also included in this publication.

We urge you to reach out to your Senators and Congresspersons to request assistance for the families and children affected by the hurricane, especially those in New Orleans. It doesn't cost much to make a phone call!

Contact information: The White House (202)456-1414 and the U.S. Capitol, Senate & Congress (202) 224-3121.
