To walk through the front door of Ivey League Learning Centers is to enter a community - a community of teachers, parents, and children working together to create a healthy place for children to grow. Children excitedly prepare their own afternoon snack, Miss Andrea arrives to lead the children in movement and dance exercises, three boys crowd around a computer to play a new game, and everywhere people are busy and involved. It is difficult to tell the parent volunteers from the teachers because all the adults seem comfortable interacting with the children.Christyne Ivey, founder and director of the Learning Centers, gives me a tour of the classrooms. In each room she introduces me to every teacher, every parent, and every child. No one is acknowledged only by name; each introduction is accompanied by a comment on what that child is doing or an explanation of who that child is related to in the program. And there are lots of brothers and sisters and cousins involved in the center! Obviously, the children are used to these introductions, because they await their turns with eager patience.
