World's Largest Chain Struggling

Where there is great love there are always miracles.
Willa Cather

Newspapers in Australia were abuzz last week with stories about the crisis at Brisbane-based ABC Learning Centres. When ABC reported poor financial results in its half-yearly profit report, the value of its stock plummeted by 43% before trading was suspended.

ABC operates over 2000 centers in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Its 1000 centers in the U.S. are operated under the brand Learning Care Group.

Reports are circulating ("Groves May Be Forced to Sell Kindies," The Australian, February 28, 2008) that ABC owner Eddy Groves has appointed Goldman Sachs to negotiate the sale of its holdings in the United Kingdom and the United States. Stay tuned.
