News From the Philippines

Bonnie received this message from Maria Denise Cruz-Zara, the World Forum Foundation's National Representative from the Philippines:

"It is officially 1 week since the terrible tragedy hit Tacloban, Cebu, Busuanga, and other parts of the country.  Still, we are hearing news here in Metro Manila that many devastated areas are not receiving the help that they need.  It is very disappointing because I have personally witnessed the voluntary efforts of the Filipino people, especially in the city capital where I'm from.  So many places opened up as drop off points for donations.  A lot of venues are becoming places where people can repack goods.  Friends are launching projects to help donate.  Restaurants are donating 100% of their profits.  Help is literally everywhere and yet help could not penetrate where it is supposed to. Don't get me wrong. Help is being given by so many private institutions, including the government, of course.  So many countries are also sending their men and pledging money for help.  We are so grateful.  But there is something wrong with how logistics in our country work.  A representative of Malacañang Palace (our White House in the Philippines) even admits that 'this is a logistical nightmare.'  Efficiency and a solid plan for disasters and tragedies are just not in place.  I know they are working hard and I applaud them for it, but they need to step it up.

"On a lighter note, today our preschoolers brought milk, water, medicines, food, toiletries, and stuffed toys to school and helped the teachers and parents repack the goods.  We had to teach them where typhoons come from, show them filtered videos about what happened in Tacloban, and make them feel very simply how these children need their help.  Our kids were so eager to fill in their bags with the relief goods.  As I was watching them 'work,' I saw the passion in their eyes.  I'm sure they cannot truly grasp this tragedy 100%, but the idea is there.  The willingness to share their energy and time is just so admirable to look at.

In response to inquiries from many members of the World Forum community, we have asked Denise to let us know when an avenue opens for early childhood professionals worldwide to support early childhood professionals in the Philippines whose lives and programs have been disrupted by the storm.  We will keep you posted.
