Are You a Good Listener?

Learning is not attained by chance. It must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.
Abigail Adams

"Good listening skills are at the core of building trusting relations that inspire peak performance," observes Paula Jorde in her book, Inspiring Peak Performance.  In the book, she offers a list of behaviors that may get in the way of attentive listening.  Here are a few examples:

*  I usually think about my response when the other person is talking.

*  I am impatient with people who don't get right to the point.

*  I often finish sentences for people.

*  I carry on a conversation with someone while I am doing another task.

*  I feel uncomfortable when people express anger, hurt, disappointment, or hopelessness, so I try to say things that will make the feeling go away.
