Supporting Staff Morale

We may either smother the divine fire in youth or we may feed it.
Jane Addams, 1860-1935, Social Justice Advocate

"When parents ask me, 'What's a great place for my child?' I say, 'Check the atmosphere,'" explains Luis Hernandez in the DVD, Supporting Teacher Performance (part of the Voices: Insights from the Field series). "Check to see if there’s happiness in the air. Is there joy there? Are children happy AND are adults happy?"

On the same DVD, other experienced practitioners in the early child field talk more about the crucial need to build and maintain staff morale:

"Teachers should be in a situation where they are constantly learning," asserts Ellen Hall. "That is key to building high morale. The school becomes a professional learning community."

Gigi Schweikert talks about helping teachers value their role: "I call early childhood professionals Neuro-Developmental Specialists. A Neuro-Developmental Specialist is forming the brain of tomorrow."
