Artifacts – Process and Product

In the book, Caring Spaces, Learning Places, Jim Greenman writes this about children’s art:
"What's wrong with art products? A lot, if that describes your art program. Handprint turkeys, cotton puff snowmen or bunnies, cut out color-between-the-lines tulips, all products usually beloved by parents and the refrigerator magnet industry, and loathed by early care and education professionals. The value of art for children is the creative process."

Greenman admits that parents often long to be given products made by their children, so he suggests an alternative: "That desire to have something to show for their child’s experiences can and should be met with selected products or artifacts: samples or photographs of the child's work in progress or completed."
