The Gift of Being Fully Present

Being mindful can increase mental and emotional well-being.
Psychologist Elyssa Barbash, Ph.D.

Deb Curtis, in her well-loved book, Really Seeing Children, writes about the gift we can give children by leaving behind our adult distractions and being fully present with them. “The most useful way to see outside ourselves and our adult agenda,” she explains, “is to be aware of our own perspective as we relate to children and our work. Once we are aware of it, we can choose to put our adult agenda aside to really see children.”

In this challenging time where we are dealing with the stress of a global pandemic, it’s to be expected that adult worries tend to crowd our thinking. However, being able to intentionally release worry for a moment in order to become fully present with children might just be the best gift we can give not only children, but ourselves as well.
