Day Without Child Care
June 13, 2012
If you remove stone after stone, even a mountain will be leveled.
-Indian proverb
What would happen if child care were not available?  This was the question the Local Child Care Planning Council of Humboldt (CA) County explored with their video "A Day Without ChildCare".  This well-produced video presents some very serious issues about the importance of child care services in a humorous context.  Often our advocacy messages are so very serious.  This takes a different approach to get the message across.  Check this one out and then come back to ExchangeEveryDay, scroll down, and tell us what you think.

This video is so important and gets the message across so anyone can understand how important early childhood education and child care are to the well-being of our nation. This should be shown on national T.V. and to our political candidates!

An excellent video that expresses its message on quality early childhood education without being "preachy". I would love to see communities across the US do something similar.

The video was humerous, but it is something to consider that and will happen if there was no childcare. It not only effects the childcare staff, it effects the community. To see this actually happen would be a nightmare. The State and Federal should really consider not cutting budget for childcare because most parents can't afford it without help. I lose children when parents subsidize get terminated due to budget cuts where they are placed on months of waiting lists just to wait in line to receive funding. Sometimes im forced to give discounts because fees are not affordable while parents wait for funding and most of the time child care information services do not contact clients whene funding is available.

In 11 minutes, the messages about the importance of quality Early Learning & Education, aka childcare, are pinpointed. While done in a humerous way, it is not funny. It is a key factor in economics, education, and human capital. While all the "problems" of the world or the US would not be solved if we have high quality, affordable, and aligned early learning & education, it would make a significant difference in how money is spent and priorities set.

I really great advocacy tool.

I really appreciate this video and the way the message is offered!

Since our short-sighted governor and legislature just cut Head Start and voucher funding, it is so important that they really think about what happens without quality early childhood programs. They keep saying that more jobs are essential but fail to realize the supports that need to go with them.
This is so frustrating but as advocates, we keep sending the reminder messages. Thanks for the efforts of those who made this film and make it available to all of us.

This video was well made and should be shared federally and in every state and city. Child Care is a very important service to provide and we do it because we love the children and help the parents to prepare them for the future!

It is very odd that people do not understand how this service impacts other key services in our community. The portrayal of gentleman waiting in the ER for attention with a nail in his head was delivered in comedic fashion but what if that really happened? Many parents may not have a good friend or relative that can keep their child or children.

Child Care is vital!

Great video, Must see by the legislative body to understand how important early care is , not just the care but also the quality of care. Let us learn to respect the day care providers who work tirelessly giving their all ,for low wages and not so great work conditions.
Hopefully the govt can come up with incentives for small daycares who struggle to make ends meet and programs for day care staff like affordable health care etc.

Good video. Informative and everyone needs to think beyond just their small area and look at the big picture. We are forming the future of America.

Stormy · June 14, 2012

Enjoyed the content though it seemed polarized in its delivery. It lacked one of the key components of high quality care, diversity. One african american, and a one child care environment is not inclusive this might represent the county but it falls short of the state and the nation. It was good but with more intentionality it could have been outstanding.

Norma K. Stone · June 14, 2012

I thought the concept was well presented, perhaps too "stagey," but effective in its impact. The little vignettes of people who were affected were telling, but the humor may have diluted the urgency. I wonder how one could use it and get some feedback on what viewers thought and what, if any, action they would or did take.

I think that video was superb! I wish that something like that would be produced in B.C. and or Canada for wide release. I appreciated the humour with the serious message. I think that many people do not feel that the childcare crisis relates to them in any way and so have no intention of supporting any sort of government funding or support. This short video shows the true trickle down effect that the lack of childcare would represent. I am an early childhood educator and have been for over 30 years. Within 5 years of completing college there was only about 5 people in my class that were still in the field (due to low wages), now there is no one from my class still in the field. I don't blame them, 30 years of barely making ends meet, knowing you will never have enough retirement savings to survive, taking care of other peoples children because you can't afford to stay home and take care of your own, never being able to afford to go away on vacation.....I work in child care because I love my profession and know that I provide an invaluable service, not because I ever thought I would make any money.

I agree that they shoul include childcare as education so it will be our number one priority!
I been in child care for 24 years first as a family provider then centers as everything from infants to schoolage and management. I know how frustrating the money issue is for providers and parents. They can't afford to pay more but we can't afford to work for so little!

"3C", that is so true. Here we have normally in a one year time 3-4 home providers close down because they don't make enough money. A lot of people do child care because they only do it for the money. I do child care because I love my job. It is so true, we make no money, but if we try to improve there is no support to help. I stay open more days then not, because my clients need me.
"3C" could happen, I had someone stop by that is running for office in some political position, and didn't have the time to listen to the needs of child care. I guess he didn't want my vote, and then I wondered who took care of his children.
This was a great video,

This video clip was awesome and right on the mark. Every legislator as well as the president should view this video. My teachers work so hard and can barely afford to live on their salary. Not to mention the burden the state puts on us to prove we are a quality center - involving both money and time. Most days I feel that we are subsidizing child care. Voucher money has dried up so our enrollment is down which means cutting staff hours or jobs. We are in this field because we love children and understand the value of a quality early childhood education. The children we teach today are the citizens of the future. They deserve the best.

Very enjoyable! Even though this video takes a more light hearted look at a heavy hearted issue, the message of adovacy is well articulated. The power for change comes from sharing perspectives with others that help them quickly and easily understand the ways decision making can affect 'them'. So well done and great acting! Fun to see too - the beginning though seemed to just be like anything we rely on for service that is suddenly taken away from us---an inconvenience and a problem to be faced and remedied. So in a way the point was not really stressed as any different than a bus line being taken away or a store we always go to being shut down. Later when the teacher spoke about the value of child care for children-that rocked! Loved seeing teachers of all ages too with the children. The activities and experiences filmed were great advertisement for what children DO learn in centers too! Great PR job!

Great video to send to the legislative body to make them understand the importance of child care. Quality programs are very costly. Wish Govt will support them with providing incentives, like low rent , low interest loans etc.
It was evident from the video that the system broke down because of non availability of child care. This is so true. How many depend on child care programs , and yet not many speak and stand up for the day care staff who tirelessly give their all for poor wages and work conditions.(It is a vicious circle ,parents cannot pay for the real cost of care, the Daycares cannot pay good wages and staff leave for better pay elsewhere.)
The Public schools gets so much , why can't early care be given a small portion?
State govts should put incentives and provide for low cost health benefits and other such low cost programs for these workers. After all, Child Care programs makes it possible for American's to go to work!

We loose too many young women who are talented and educated and cannot afford to stay/ I have a young teacher who is working on her masters and would love to stay in the early education field, as she feels this is where she can make the greatest difference in the lives of children, however she is now going for a teaching credential because she doesn't want to be thirty and still living at home. It is almost impossible to find really well qualified men who will work in our field. Our school is a private non-profit and we do pay competitively for our area which means we do give medical benefits but our staff no matter how well educated or how long they have been with us cannot now make over $18 an hour.

This was a very entertaining and informative, thought-provoking video. Although it was aimed at changing legislature, I work with an au pair agency and could not help but feel the need to mention the au pair program as a viable alternative to child care centers. Au pairs provide quality live in childcare that is affordable. Parents can count on constant childcare in their home, provided by young, energetic, educated individuals, and the cost works out to about $8 per hour for 45 hours of childcare per week. Au pairs come from around the world so they provide valuable cultural exchange for families as well. Parents do not need to miss work because their children are ill or the daycare center cannot take them. Au pairs with Au Pair Care also receive excellent childcare and safety training when they arrive in the US and are certified in CPR. The au pair program is designated by the US Department of State, Families who choose to have an au pair join their family can rest assured their children will have reliable, quality childcare.

I like that the video emphasizes the importance of child care in terms of social and emotional development and doesn't exclusively focus on getting ready for school and academics. It's also important that it states over and over again that it's QUALITY child care that children need. Moments before opening this Exchange ED email, I read an article from Australia about EC professionals leaving the field because of low wages and poor conditions. It was a strong persuasive article but there were many nasty comments--mostly of the type that women should stay home and why should "we" pay higher taxes for "them." I think this video also illustrates that this is a societal issue...that we're all better off when our children are well cared for. Thanks for sharing!

A fun way to look at a serious subject--I liked the way they included the people who thought it should not affect them--but it affects everyone. Something needs to be done to make childcare more affordable for families. I run a private, non-profit childcare center and do everything I can to cut costs and we still cannot make ends meet. The staff do not work here because they are making a high wage, but because they believe in what they do. This is not babysitting--it is early child education.
