Get Out of Their Way
June 24, 2014
The eyes are of little use if the mind be blind.
-Arab Proverb

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, when asked by parents how to get their children interested in science, replies:

"Get out of their way.  Kids are born curious.  Period."

You can watch his entire pitch for getting out of the way on this YouTube video.

This is fantastic advice. Even as a outdoor science educator I've tried to limit the ways I let my students explore. "Don't pick the leaves." " Don't pick up sticks or rocks." "Stay on the trail." There is way more interesting stuff off of the trail--as Tyson said about the binoculars--both literally and figuratively.
