Pacific Oaks to Merge. In April, early childhood pioneer Pacific Oaks College merged with the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. While the merger was blessed by the Board of Trustees of Pacific Oaks, according to Pasadena Now, news of the merger has not been received well by many college officials who fear Pacific Oaks will be unable to maintain its unique identity.

Union Bill Defeated in Washington
. The Washington State House of Representatives in April approved legislation supporting the unionization of all centers receiving public subsidies, according to the Seattle Post Intelligencer. A companion bill failed to be approved in the State Senate, precluding its passage in 2009.

Head Start Names New Exec
. The National Head Start Association announced that Yasmina Vinci as its new Executive Director. Vinci previously served as Executive Director of NACCRRA and currently leads the World Forum Foundation's Voices of Hope AIDS project.

Spanking in the News
. Sad to say that David Nixon, the principal of John C. Calhoun Elementary in Calhoun, South Carolina, has been gaining notoriety for using a wooden paddle to discipline students.

iPhone Ethics. After a huge outcry, Apple pulled an app from its iPhone called "Baby Shaker," in which users shake a crying baby until it dies.

I understand that there is probably more to the story and to not believe everything you read, but... really a principal spanking using a wooden paddle? The follow-up on that, I would hope would be immediate termination and what message are we sending to the children?
