Life's Lessons
November 3, 2009
Action has meaning only in relationship, and without understanding relationship, action on any level will only breed conflict. The understanding of relationship is infinitely more important than the search for any plan of action.
-Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), Philosopher
"Don't take yourself so seriously.  No one else does."

This is one of the 50 life lessons offered by Regina Brett, a columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, as reprinted in Work & Family Life (October 2009).  Here are a few of our favorites....

"Don't compare your life to others'.  You have no idea what their journey is all about."

"It's never too late to have a happy childhood.  But the second one is up to you and no one else."

"Be eccentric now.  Don't wait for old age to wear purple."

"No one is in charge of your happiness except you."

"What other people think of you is none of your business."

"If we threw all our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back."

"Don't audit life.  Show up and make the most of it now."

In Places for Childhoods: Making Quality Happen in the Real World, Jim Greenman reflects on the daily challenges of working in the early childhood world and trying to make a difference.  The book includes reflections by Greenman on caregivers, quality programs, organizations, and parents with reactions provided by other experts in our field.

"Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to where purple."

And don't rely on your computer's spell-check program. It's discouraging to see a fine organization like Child Care Exchange make stupid errors.
