What Engages Americans
January 11, 2010
To be successful, one has to be one of three bees - the queen bee, the hardest working bee, or the bee that does not fit in.
-Suzy Kassem, Egyptian-American poet
For its final issue of 2009, Newsweek magazine (www.newsweek.com) combed through 2009's most popular books, movies, music and TV shows to sort out current American "obsessions."  What they found is quite interesting (some might say quite concerning).  In looking at the top categories, one can't help but wonder how do we prepare young children for a world with these obsessions...
  • 70%  -- Violence
  • 60%  -- Money
  • 45%  -- Sex
  • 40% -- Youth
  • 20% -- Vampires
  • 10% -- Politics
  • 10%  -- God

Is this the 2009 American favorites, world favorites? Where were the most popular books, films, tv shows etc...from? The human condition might be using entertainment to reconcile struggles, but there are so many more 'categories'- food, the topics of reality shows, power -- to name a few. It's hard to say just what is going on without really having a lot more information about how and what was analyzed. On the surface, it's sad- but I have hope and am sure that there is so much more to people's obsessions and interests than these one word titles.

What is the rank for war?
What is the rank for peace?
I know they are not equal either.
