Key to Leadership Success
August 2, 2010
The gardener digs in another time, without past or future, beginning or end... Around you the landscape lies transfigured. Here is the Amen beyond the prayer.
-Derek Jarman, 1942-1994, Artist, filmmaker, activist
In his famous book, Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive (New York: William Morrow, 1988), Harvey Mackay recounted a conversation he had with Gerald Symonds who built the multi-billion dollar Tenneco company, where he outlined the four things you need to do to build a successful business:

"One: Find the capital. Two: Find a favorable environment to employ it. Three: Hire the key people.  And here's where he took a long pause and said:  'So far, I'm not telling you anything you didn't already know, because number four is the important one.  Then you've got to know when to get out of the way.  That's the hardest part, but that's the one that will make you rich.'"
