On September 22, the National Head Start Association held an awards dinner, “The Dream Lives On,” which celebrated the 45th anniversary of Head Start. At the dinner tribute was made to pioneers of Head Start such as Edward Zigler, Urie Bronfenbrenner, Marian Wright Edelman, and Ted Kennedy. In addition, the Sargent Shriver Award for Excellence was given to Gayle Cunningham, who began her distinguished career in 1965 as a Head Start volunteer. She now heads the Jefferson County Committee for Economic Opportunity, which operates 19 NAEYC-accredited Head Start centers in Birmingham, Alabama. - Patrick Gaspard, the Director of Political Affairs for President Barack Obama;
- Dreya Holmes, who as an 11-year-old mobilized a successful campaign that converted an about-to-be-closed community pool into the largest outdoor water “sprayground” in Ohio;
- Ramona Ortiz, a lawyer for the Exxon Mobile Corporation; and
- Loretta Sanchez, who has served for seven terms as a U.S. Congresswoman from California.
The surprise of the evening was the presenter of the Helen Taylor Outstanding Parent Award, Lucille O’Neal, who talked about how thankful she was that her four children, including NBA star Shaquille, had the opportunity to attend Head Start.

Hearing more stories about Head Start brings me to a very important subject.
Head Start! Once again it is under attack. I heard the same threats eight years ago. Luckily the Head Start families fought to make congress understand how important it is to the health of our country.
Again, we have to get out there and vote for those who will keep government programs that have proven to be successful, and have helped millions of low income families over the years. We can not count on individual states to solve our problems, nor go back to the segregated educational programs of the past.
It is time to fight for what is right and what is right for ALL and not just a few interest groups. If I hear one more person tell me I should listen to the PEOPLE, I will scream. Who am I? I am a person and I too am an American.
When I hear the voice of the PEOPLE, I hear many many different voices because these Untied States is made of many many different needs and and not just one point of view. It is the many that we need to respond to.
