I need to respond to Stephen's article in regard to "abstract and symbolic thinking"...
As educators 0-5 and K-12 we must understand the importance of developing these skills. We know the alphabetic principal is based on an abstract sound/symbol concept. We know or should know the developmental learning stages of abstract/symbolic thought. And we know or should know that imaginative play intentionally supported manifests these two skills. We certainly know the reading process (language/literacy development) is based on the alphabetic principal therefore we know or should know that imaginative play is or should be a part of every educators, 0-5 or K-12 or at the least 0-Third Grade, teaching repertoire.
