Qualifications of Effective Teachers
September 12, 2011
To program learning often means to hamper it by restricting children to the stereotyped anticipations of the programmer.
-Frances Hawkins, 1913-2006, teacher and author

A 4 year degree in an early childhood education program in this economy is not a prudent investment and in my experience of 47 years does not make a good teacher. I think we can all agree that the pendulum is swinging back and many are questioning whether obtaining a degree at the expense of hefty loans is worth the outcome.

An associate's degree with classes specific to infants, toddlers and preschoolers is of upmost importance; however, crucial to this training is a mentorship component. A successful teacher knows that quality emotional and instructional interactions are the mechanisms through which early childhood programs transmit academic, language, and social competencies to children. This can be introduced in a book but can only be experienced in a classroom which is carefully supervised by a highly skilled and trained mentor.

I think it is time that we rethink where we put our dollars!

Your list of essential qualities for teachers left out Work Ethics, which tops my list, hands down. Regardless how much education, experience and other good qualities a person might have, if they don't have good work ethics, they aren't good teachers in my opinion. Qualities that demonstrate good work ethics such as attendance, punctuality, professionalism, confidentiality, being a team player, a willingness to stay current regarding standards for best practice, etc., are as important or more so than anything else on your list!
