Learning Outdoors
September 14, 2011
Teachings come from everywhere when you open yourself to them. That’s the trick of it really, to open yourself to everything and everything opens itself to you.
-Richard Wagamese, 1955-2017, Embers: One Ojibway's Meditations
In the introduction to the latest Learning Moments CD, "Outdoor Play," George Forman observes...

"When children play outdoors, we expect them to run, jump, and stretch beyond what is possible in the classroom.  For this reason we often treat outdoor play as a time for gross motor play, group games, and sports.   Teachers less often consider the high-level thinking that occurs outdoors as children solve problems, negotiate rules, construct with loose parts, and figure out how to navigate changes in the terrain."

To see an example of high level thinking taking place outdoors, view the video sample of "Outdoor Play."

Learning Moments CDs (for use on a computer) present real-life video files that are the perfect complement to workshops, lectures, and online courses on how young children learn through play. They make general principles of child development and early education come to life by revealing children's natural process of discovery, invention, and learning.

Amen!
There is always so much more that we can do outdoors with and for children! The trend toward natural playgrounds is wonderful - and gets at some of this.
But we have to stop thinking of outdoor play as "recess" - and "downtime" for the teachers. It is anything but.
