Drop Your Assumptions
October 3, 2011
We are leaders of inclusiveness and community, of love, equity, and justice.
-Judith Heumann, 1947-2023, Disability Rights Activist
Roger von Oech shares this story about how we are hobbled by assumptions in his book, Expect the Unexpected Or You Won't Find It (San Francisco: Berrett-Koehler, 2002):

"Inventor Thomas Edison had a simple test he used to measure the 'unexpectedness quotient' of prospective employees.  He would invite a candidate to lunch and serve a bowl of soup.  He would then watch to see whether the person salted his soup before tasting it.  If he did, he wouldn't be offered the job.  Edison felt that people are more open to different possibilities if they don't salt their experience of life before tasting it."

Von Oech concludes:  "In your current situation, what assumptions can you drop?  In what ways are you 'salting your experience' before tasting it?"

Let's hope Mr. Edison did not make the assumption that the person would not make a good employee based on that one interesting aspect.
