As the Pew Center on the States concludes its 10-year initiative to advance pre-kindergarten for all three and four-year-olds, it has released the final report of its Pre-K Now campaign, "Transforming Public Education: Pathway to a Pre-K-12 Future", which strongly advocates that policymakers transform public education by moving away from our current K-12 system.  One key recommendation is that the K-12 system incorporates play-based, child-centered approaches into its classes.  The report states...

"Direct instruction has an important place in classrooms, but those dominated by teacher-centered approaches tend not to maximize learning.  Instead, teachers trained to convert child development research into practice know how to complement direct instruction by structuring and facilitating activities in which children have a more dynamic role:  creative play, working with manipulatives, independent or small group projects.  These teachers are at the ready to provide feedback and to help children connect what they are doing to targeted concepts.  Such intentional practices, common in high-quality early programs, foster social-emotional development and cognitive skills by giving children opportunities to exercise their curiosity and bring their own experiences into the learning environment."

Twenty five years ago I was frustrated as my daughter went from a developmentally appropriate child-centered preschool to a kindergarten filled with worksheets and meaningless pre-cut crafts. I worked with her teachers then, as a parent advocating for my child but also as an educator using the research to back me up. Yesterday I visited my granddaughter's preschool only to see the exact same worksheets and pre-cut craft from that kindergarten so long ago. When questioned, the explanation too often is that "we need to get kids ready for school". There is a real disconnect between the research regarding readiness and what's happening in settings for young children. As the title of this article suggests, we do need to push high-quality early childhood education up into kindergarten and the primary grades, but it won't happen until those forces above align their practice with the research about how children learn...... We are swimming upstream in a river with the force of a tsunami.

This report has effectively put into words the thoughts and discussions I have had with many like-minded professionals in the field, who see the system as the upside down, OLD one it is and in desperate need of a push-up -- in more ways than one! It gives me Hope to see this being brought to light.

I am tired of being told by the 2 and 3 year old caregivers that "they need to be ready for K, 1, 2, -- 3rd grade testing!" when I emphasize the importance of play-based learning and social/emotional growth and development.

How can I obtain a hard copy of this report to share with my DOE?

This idea, this vision cannot disappear. "Transforming Public Education" is in every educators, zero to twelfth grade, conversations. Parents also realize this need of change but lost in which avenue to take to reach the change. Long standing and current professionals in education, Research professionals in education, advocates of education, higher education professors/instructors know the reality of this idea, this vision. Where are YOU, where are WE in making this happen?!?!
