The Goal of Education
November 21, 2011
Never regard study as a duty but as an enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the community to which your later works belong.
-Albert Einstein
In her insightful book, Intellectual Emergencies: Some Reflections on Mothering and Teaching (which is included in our Holiday Sale, see below), Lilian Katz observes....

"The goal of education is not enjoyment;  that is the goal of entertainment....  The goal of education is to engage the minds of the learners so that their understandings of significant phenomena and events become deeper, clearer, and more accurate.  When we succeed at engaging their minds in such things, they find it enjoyable.  But, though enjoyment cannot be our main goal, it can be a by-product of good teaching."

I see the point of what Ms. Katz is saying, however I would say a more accurate statement would be:

The goal of education is to help chidlren discover the enjoyment of engaging their minds, so that they will develop an interest in and a passion for learning far beyond their years as a "student".

Good teaching should introduce and model to children the absoloute thrill of observing the world, hypothesizing, testing a hypothesis, problem solving, researching, and discovering.

"Enjoyment" in regards to anything worth doing is a worthy goal. That is what guids children's choise in vocation, freetime, daydreaming, goalsetting, giving, caring...

Facillitating the enjoyment of learning is a worthy goal in itself.
