OnDesign International Working Forum
February 22, 2012
It is something to be able to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statute, and so to make a few objects beautiful; but it is far more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look…To affect the quality of the day—that is the highest of arts.
-Henry David Thoreau
The new Global Collaborative OnDesign for Children, a Working Forum of the World Forum Foundation, is happy to invite early educators, architects, designers and others from around the world to join our international Working Forum this June, in Berkeley, California.  This interactive forum will allow for in-depth discussions of the latest trends in the development of environments and the integration of various educational principles into spaces for young children.

  • Location:  The Working Forum will be held at the Clark Kerr Campus at the University of California, Berkeley, June 27-29, 2012.

  • Logistics:  The registration fee is US $495 through April 1; US $575 after April 1; and US $675 after June 1.  This includes most meals over the 3-day period.

  • Lodging:  On-site accommodations are in two or three-bedroom suites, available for US $77/person/night for a shared bedroom in a suite, or US $102/person/night for a singe room in a suite.

Inspiring Spaces not only talks about how to create inspiring classroom spaces, but also is highly inspirational through its generous display of creative classroom spaces.  The book is built around seven principles of design:

  • Nature inspires beauty
  • Color generates interest
  • Furnishing defines space
  • Texture adds depth
  • Displays enhance the environment
  • Elements enhance ambiance
  • Focal points attract attention

An inspiring environment is essential for helping young children learn. The Rating Observation Scale for Inspiring Environments challenges teachers to examine classrooms in a totally new way — with an eye for what is aesthetically beautiful and inspiring.

This groundbreaking tool assesses classrooms in a whole new way!

This book is a companion observation guide for Inspiring Spaces for Young Children.
