Is Silence Golden?
March 13, 2012
If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.
-Fred Rogers
The title of a Harvard Business Review OnPoint article (Fall 2010) posed the question: "Is Silence Killing Your Company?"  Here is a quick summary of the article:
  • Remaining silent in the face of conflict can generate feelings of humiliation, anger, and resentment that can devolve into a "spiral of silence," which exacts a high cost from individuals and their organizations.

  • To avoid descending the spiral, employees need to find the courage to act deviantly and bring differences out in the open;  leaders must be careful not to punish anyone — whether explicitly or implicitly — for speaking out;  and organizations must not reinforce the idea that toeing the line is the safest way to keep your job and further your career.

  • Replacing the spiral of silence with a virtuous spiral of communication will help bring fresh ideas to light, ensure that alternative courses of action are explored, and allow the free exchange of information that could enhance both the individual's and the organization's work.
